Large groups have been rescued in both Crosby and Wirral this week

Around 100 people were rescued from a sandbank on the Sefton coast as the tide came in, HM Coastguard Crosby said.

The large group on Crosby beach, who were at risk of being cut off and stuck in mud, were guided along a safe route by rescue crews, including HM Coastguard and RNLI lifeguards.

It came during what crews have described as a "busy week" on the Merseyside coastline, with multiple incidents reported.

Other incidents this week included two separate cases of people becoming stuck in mud on Crosby Beach and Leasowe Beach, six young people being rescued from a flooding tide at Crosby, and two people being rescued after becoming stranded on Hilbre Island.

On Thursday, another "large group" was also escorted to safety after becoming cut off by the incoming tide off Harrison Drive Beach, Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said.

Rescue teams were also called out to reports of missing children and concerns for swimmers in the sea.

HM Coastguard has reminded anyone visiting the coast to always check tide times and stay aware of their surroundings.

In all incidents, people were found and safely rescued.
