Emergency services were called after people heard a man shouting for help

A man and his dog had to be rescued from a beach after they became stuck in thick, deep mud.

After the man waded into the mud at Leasowe Bay in Wirral to help free his dog he himself became trapped up to his knees, HM Coastguard said.

His shouts for help on Wednesday were heard by nearby members of the public who called emergency crews.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team attended the scene and used specialist equipment to pull both the dog and his owner to safety. The man was taken to hospital as a precaution while his dog was later collected by family members.

The man got into difficulty after trying to rescue his dog

HM Coastguard Officer in Charge, Paul Ambrose said: "Unfortunately, once in difficulty, the owner was unable to get themselves back to safety.

"A big 'thank you' goes to the members of the public who stayed on scene and provided reassurance until Coastguard arrived.

"Please remember if you see a person or animal stuck in mud, do not attempt a rescue yourself.

"Mud can be dangerous and conditions can change quickly. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

"We wish both the dog and owner the very best after the ordeal."
