New galleries planned with £270k museum grant
Redcar and Cleveland Borough CouncilA museum is set for a "major transformation" after securing a £272,000 grant.
Kirkleatham Museum in Redcar will use the money to redevelop its three main galleries and explore the themes of People and Place, Industry and Innovation, and Heritage and Discovery.
The funds will also be used to improve conservation, lighting and displays at its Saxon Princess collection, which exhibits treasure from a rare 7th Century Anglo-Saxon burial site.
Labour-led Redcar and Cleveland Council said design work would begin this month, with work in the galleries due to take place in early 2027 for a spring reopening.
The grant was jointly funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and the Wolfson Foundation.
Kirkleatham Museum welcomes about 80,000 visitors a year.
The redevelopment would replace older displays, enhance accessibility and better environmental conditions to care for the museum's collections, the council said.
"Many of its gallery spaces have not seen major investment in recent decades," the local authority said. "This project will address that."
