Road closures will be in place during this year's East Cleveland Classic

Rolling road closures are set to take place to keep people safe during a major cycling race, organisers have warned.

The East Cleveland Classic will be held on 12 April in Saltburn, with the women's race starting at 09:00 BST and the men's competition beginning at 13:15.

Roads along the course will be closed to traffic by police escort vehicles for periods of about 15 minutes to allow the race to pass safely.

But Glenside will be closed all day from 06:00 BST to all unauthorised traffic between the junction of Windsor Terrace and the junction on Albion Terrace.

The East Cleveland Classic starts and finishes in Saltburn and takes riders through Skelton, Guisborough, Charltons, Boosbeck, Lingdale and Brotton.

The women's event consists of four laps covering a total of 68 miles (109km), while the men's race covers 100 miles (161km) over six laps.

Each lap will see riders take on the challenging climb of Saltburn Bank.

The event's director, Andy Langford, said the races would bring communities together with many people decorating their villages along the route.

"Fans will be out in force to welcome and cheer the riders up the climb of Saltburn Bank each lap," he said.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's deputy leader Carrie Richardson said the event was a chance "to have fun and showcase the beauty of East Cleveland to cycling fans across the country and the world".
