A man approached a woman while she was walking in Normanton

An attack on a woman walking along a street in Derby has been linked by police to six other assaults on women.

The victim was approached from behind and assaulted as she walked along Derby Lane in Normanton at about 09:20 BST on Monday, with a 36-year-old man later arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail pending further investigations.

The force said in an update on Wednesday he had been detained in hospital awaiting an assessment under the Mental Health Act.

Derbyshire Police said they were linking the attack to a number of similar assaults in Normanton last month.

On 29 April, assaults were reported at 16:50 BST in Avondale Road, 19:35 in Harriet Street, 21:30 in Mount Street and 23:05 in Moore Street.

These were followed by two further assaults on 30 April at 09:40 in Grove Street and 14:40 in Normanton Road.
