Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust said it was aware of hundreds of incidents directed at staff last year

An NHS trust has launched a partnership with police after it recorded about 1,600 incidents of violence, aggression or abuse directed towards staff last year.

Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust said the figure included about 640 physical assaults and 935 incidents of abuse and non-physical aggression.

It has teamed up with Thames Valley Police (TVP) as part of Operation Cavell, a nationwide plan to make sure incidents are taken seriously, properly investigated and prosecuted where appropriate.

Julian Emms, the trust's chief executive, said its staff should never face violence, aggression or abuse.

The trust provides physical and mental health services for people across Berkshire.

"This partnership sends a clear message that we will stand alongside our staff, support them to report incidents and work with TVP to ensure appropriate action is taken," Emms added.

"Every report matters and helps us create a safer environment for our colleagues, our patients and our communities."

Det Ch Insp Stuart May, from TVP, said: "NHS staff provide an essential service to our communities and deserve to feel safe while carrying out their work.

"When NHS staff report an offence, they should have confidence that it will be taken seriously.

"Through Operation Cavell, our officers will investigate incidents thoroughly, support victims and work closely with Berkshire Healthcare to ensure offenders are held accountable where appropriate."
