Police have closed North Street in Wilton and evacuated the building

A key route in a historic market town has been closed after a building partially collapsed.

Wiltshire Police said it had closed North Street in Wilton near Salisbury after a report on Friday morning that a building was "unsafe".

The side wall of the property, formerly the Six Bells pub, has given way and police cordons remain in place at the scene.

Officers said the building had been evacuated "as a precaution" and the relevant authorities had been made aware.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it was informed but did not attend.

Wiltshire Police said in a statement: "We have closed North Street in Wilton following a report this morning of an unsafe building.

"The building has been evacuated as a precaution and the incident reported to the appropriate authorities."
