Road reopens after fire engulfs thatched cottage

A road has reopened after a blaze engulfed the thatched roof of a cottage.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said it was called to the scene on Tank Lane in Broad Chalke, near Wilton, Wiltshire, at about 17:33 BST on Friday.

Approximately 50 firefighters were called out to help at the height of the incident, deploying five hose reel jets, compressed air foam, and two aerial ladder platforms.

The fire was out at 12:16 BST and North Street - the main road into the village - has since been reopened.

Crews from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance at the scene.

A spokesperson for DWFRS said firefighters worked "extremely hard" to bring the fire under control and limit damage to the building.

"A massive thank you to local residents for your kind offers of refreshments throughout the incident and for your understanding while the road was closed," they added.
