Crews to attend scrapyard blaze until end of week

Fire crews will remain at the scene of a scrapyard fire in Barnsley, which involved old buses, until the end of the week, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFRS) said.

The blaze, which created huge plumes of black smoke, broke out at Boulder Bridge Lane, Carlton, around 19:00 BST on Saturday and at its height required 10 appliances.

The yard also contains tyres, skips and other scrap metal and the cause of the fire is still unknown, according to David Newton from SYFRS.

"We're still in a firefighting stage and we anticipate that we'll be there for the remainder of this week," he said.

He also confirmed it was clear "early on" that more resources were needed but is "confident" the blaze is under control with no chance of it spreading further.

"On Saturday evening, it was slightly different, it was very dynamic, but our crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to try and get to the point where we are now," Newton said.

The fire created a large plume of smoke

Newton said they were working with other agencies to "try and get some machinery down there and break the pile of scrap down to try and get to the root of the fire to try and extinguish it".

"So, the quicker we can do that, the quicker we can get the incident dealt with."

SYFRS has advised people living nearby to continue to keep their windows and doors closed while it "gets the smoke plume down".

The service said an investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to begin later this week.
