Police have revealed more information about an incident in which a car with a child inside was stolen and then abandoned.

The grey Volvo XC90 was taken from Long Thorpe Lane in Wakefield at about 20:30 BST on Wednesday while the child's parents were nearby, and within 15 minutes it was recovered near Woodlesford Lock in Leeds.

The two-year-old child was found safe and well.

Police said the Volvo had a 58 plate and was said to have been travelling at "excessive speed" as it passed through Carlton, Rothwell and Woodlesford, via Holmsley Lane. It also appeared to be in convoy with a blue Citroen Berlingo.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police appealed to anyone with dashcam footage or with information about what happened to get in touch.
