Police have issued a detention notice after officers said several horses and ponies were abandoned in a field in Newark.

Nottinghamshire Police said it had been made aware of several horses and ponies that were flygrazing in a field off the A46 between the Cattle Market Roundabout and Farndon Roundabout.

The force said following contact with the landowner, a Section 7c Detention Notice had been served under the Control of Horses Act 2015 - which runs out at 19:00 BST on Friday.

It said under this legislation the horses would automatically become property of the landowner, who can rehome or sell the horses after the notice runs out.

Officers appealed for anyone with information about the horses to contact the force.
