Fire at recycling centre ruled as accidental

A fire at a recycling centre in Worksop which took two days to bring under control was accidental.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the Veolia site off Claylands Avenue at 00:54 BST on Wednesday.

The brigade closed the incident at about 17:45 the following day after inspections showed all hotspots had been damped down.

A fire investigation has now concluded that the blaze's cause was accidental.

In total, 169 firefighters from across Nottinghamshire and neighbouring Derbyshire attended the incident over more than 40 hours during the fire, damping down, and investigation.

A spokesperson for the fire service said there had been no reports of any injuries.

A Veolia spokesperson said alternative arrangements had been put in place to sort recycling at other facilities.

They added: "Waste fires often ignite due to flammable items amongst the collected waste materials such as vapes, electrical items, batteries or gas canisters.

"Residents are reminded to think before disposing of these items and to check their council's website for what should and shouldn't be disposed of in household bins."
