Bridge will close for three nights for maintenance

Motorists are being asked to plan ahead after a bridge on a major route across Lowestoft is due to be closed for three nights.

Suffolk Highways said the £145m Gull Wing bridge over the waterfront, which opened to traffic in 2024, will be shut on 22, 23 and 24 September from 20:00 until 05:00 BST the next day.

The closure will allow maintenance work to be carried out.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience, but like any piece of machinery, inspection and maintenance works are required," the organisation said.

"Regular engineering inspections are undertaken on the bridge over the course of the year, the vast majority of which occur behind the scenes and without any interruption to the travelling public.

"Periodically, though, the bridge requires closing to ensure a safe working environment for the engineers undertaking the work, to protect the travelling public from any risk exposure, or to gain access to a specific part of the bridge."
