Roadworks postponed after safety concerns raised

The next phase of roadworks replacing old gas pipes has been postponed due to safety concerns.

Torbay Council said the project on Dartmouth Road in Galmpton, Devon, had been revised after issues were highlighted with traffic management and pedestrian access between Greenway Road and Manor Vale Road.

It said an agreement had been reached with Wales & West Utilities to leave the site last Friday following the completion of the project's first phase.

Contractors from Wales & West are now set to carry out the second phase of work during school half-term, between 23 October and 1 November.

The council said it was aiming to complete resurfacing work on the road following the first phase by Wednesday so it could be fully reopened.

Council bosses said a traffic management plan which included two-way lights between Manor Vale Road and Greenway Road, road closures on Greenway Road and Warborough Road and a footpath closure on Dartmouth Road would be in place during the second phase of roadworks.

"During this phase of work, traffic lights will be manned 12 hours a day, seven days a week," the council said.

The work is deemed necessary to replace ageing metal gas pipes with modern plastic ones as part of a safety upgrade programme.

The council said: "It could not be carried out over the summer and due to the nature of the work, it cannot be done overnight because of the disturbance that would cause to nearby homes."
