Vehicles destroyed in 'arson' at fishmongers

A van and car were destroyed outside Collingwood Seafood in North Shields

A car was driven into the side of a fishmongers building and then destroyed in a fire, police have said.

The car and a van were spotted ablaze at Collingwood Seafood in Clifford Street, North Shields, at about 22:20 BST on Sunday.

Pictures from the scene show the burnt-out remains of the vehicles parked outside the shop, while the wall around the entrance of the building has been knocked down.

Northumbria Police said no-one was injured in the fire and officers were working to identify who was involved.

Police are treating the fire as arson

"It was reported that one of the vehicles has collided with the front of a premises, causing damage to the wall of the building," a force spokesperson said.

"Whilst enquiries are at an early stage, officers are treating the report as a suspected arson."

Police appealed for information.
