A woman in her late teens and a man in his 20s have died in a car crash.

Northumbria Police said the crash happened on the C267 School Lane, near to Winnows Hill Farm on the north side of Derwent Reservoir in County Durham, shortly before 18:00 BST on Sunday.

It said the Volkswagen Polo had been travelling northbound on the road when it left the carriageway and hit a tree.

Two occupants in the car, a man and woman, died at the scene, the force said. A third occupant, another man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment where he is currently in a stable condition.

The force said the road was still closed to traffic.

Appealing for witnesses, Sgt Craig Bartle said: "Any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries."
