A police officer has been stabbed in the neck while on duty in Worcestershire.

West Mercia Police said officers were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously in Clifton, near Kempsey, at about 19:30 BST on Sunday.

While conducting searches, a female officer was stabbed in the neck. She was taken to hospital for treatment and has been discharged, the force added.

The suspect, a 25 year-old man, fled the scene but was located and has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.

"Police officers are dedicated to protecting people, and to be attacked while doing their job is abhorrent," said Ch Supt Edd Williams.

"I'm pleased that the officer has now been discharged from hospital, although the outcome could easily have been very different.

"The man arrested remains in custody and officers will remain in the area today as enquiries continue."
