Man pleads guilty after driving wrong way down A5

A man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and a number of other offences after driving the wrong way on the A5 in Shropshire, police said.

West Mercia Police said officers tried to stop Adam Roberts, 26, of Glasyn in Wrexham, in his BMW on 27 August, but the vehicle made off before travelling down the eastbound carriageway from Dobbies towards the Emstry roundabout in Shrewsbury.

The vehicle was stopped with a stinger before Roberts fled on foot, subsequently being located and arrested, and charged with eight offences.

He pleaded guilty to all charges at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court on 29 August and will be sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court at a later date.

The charges were as follows: Dangerous driving, possession of a class B drug, four counts of using a motor vehicle without third party insurance, four counts of driving while disqualified, fraudulently use a registration mark/ registration document, theft from store, failure to stop and failure to provide specimen for analysis [as the] vehicle driver.

Sgt Kully Singh, from the force's operations patrol unit said Roberts showed a "complete disregard for the safety of others", adding that his actions were "reckless and dangerous".

"It is sheer luck that no one was harmed," he said.

"Roberts not only ignored repeated opportunities to stop for officers, but also chose to continue driving despite being disqualified and uninsured.

"His actions placed everyone using the road at unnecessary risk and demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law."
