Granddad's death inspires boy's 100km challenge

The death of his granddad from prostate cancer is inspiring his eight-year-old grandson to run 100km (62.1 miles) throughout August to raise money for charity.

Arlo, from Shrewsbury, is taking on the challenge after John died from prostate cancer three years ago, and due to that his funds will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

The boy described his grandfather as "very nice, kind and fun".

"Our original target was to try and hit £1,000 before the end of the month but we've already gone over it, so we're going to try and aim for £2,000 now," he told the BBC.

"Me and my mum are running but my dad and my brother are on the bike because they can't catch up."

He said running during the hot weather was tiring but they have already completed more than 34km.

He and his family are making up the distance by running in the mornings, going to parkruns and they also did a run around Old Trafford - the home of John's former favourite club, Manchester United.

Arlo's father, Andrew, said the charity effort had brought the family together.

"We thought the summer holidays 'what can you do, you're not sitting indoors on the iPad', {it's] not expensive, it's healthy, it's exercise," he said.

"It's been lovely but what's been the best part is a lot of my friends and their dads have been diagnosed with prostate cancer as well, we're talking about it, we're raising awareness, and they're saying: 'This is brilliant, this is amazing'.

"It's so so prevalent unfortunately."
