A second person has been arrested after two people who were sleeping rough had an "irritant" thrown at them in Scarborough.

The man and woman suffered facial injuries in the attack in the Ramshill Road area of the town at about 02:30 BST on Wednesday.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released on bail. A 41-year-old man from Leeds was arrested on Thursday and remains in custody.

North Yorkshire Police believe the pair were targeted rather than it being a random assault on rough sleepers.

The incident led to two areas of the town - Ramshill Road and Northway - being cordoned off with road closures put in place.

A police spokesperson said: "The victims are recovering from the attack and have no lasting injuries."

They added inquiries were continuing and urged anyone with information to get in touch.
