Devon and Cornwall Police said an elderly man remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder

A murder investigation has been launched over an elderly woman's death.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to a property on Millbrook Lane in Exeter, Devon, at about 12:40 BST on Sunday after receiving welfare concerns.

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene and an elderly man from Exeter remained in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder, the force added.

Police said it is believed the man and woman knew each other and inquiries were ongoing to locate the deceased's next of kin. Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact investigating officers.

Det Insp Guy Biggar, who is leading the investigation, said a cordon had been set up at the scene and there would be an increased police presence in the area.

"I would like to reassure the community that this is being treated as an isolated incident and we are not seeking anyone else in connection to the death," he added.
