A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car was allegedly repeatedly driven at a pedestrian.

A black Audi A3 came off the road at about 18:40 BST in Alnwick, Northumberland and was driven multiple times at a man in his 30s, Northumbria Police said.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital to be treated for "serious" leg injuries, the force said.

Det Sgt Adele Catlow described the incident as "very serious" and said the man was left with "significant injuries".

"The investigation is at an early stage but we do believe those involved are known to each other," she said.

The incident occurred at the junction of St Thomas' Crescent and Sycamore Avenue.

The force has asked anyone with information to contact investigators.
