National HighwaysA man has died and two others were taken to hospital after a crash between three lorries and a car on the M6, paramedics said.
The crash was on the northbound carriageway at about 04:00 BST on Monday between junction 15, for Stoke-on-Trent, and 16, for Talke Pits, National Highways said.
The southbound carriageway was closed but reopened later in the day - the northbound carriageway was expected to be shut for some time into Monday evening.
"On arrival a man, the driver of the car, was found in a critical condition," a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.
"It quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
There were delays of more than an hour on the approach, and six miles of congestion, National Highways warned.
Paramedics said a second man, a driver of one of the HGV, was found in a serious condition and was given specialist trauma care before being taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
A third man, also a driver of an HGV, was treated for potentially serious injuries and taken to the same hospital.
"A fourth man, a HGV driver, was assessed, however sustained no injuries and was discharged at the scene," the ambulance service added.
