Warning after landslide from coast path to beach

People have been warned to stay away from a section of the South West Coast path and the beach below on Dorset's Jurassic Coast after a landslide.

A large chunk of cliff above Chapman's Pool near Swanage has collapsed near the Royal Marines memorial.

Dorset Council said: "We're asking people to stay away from the area because there may be more material to fall and that which is on the beach will still be unstable."

The council urged people to take notice of warning signs in the area and to stay away from the edge and the base of cliffs.

Echoing the warning from the council, Swanage Coastguard added: "After a long, hot summer, much of the coastline - particularly the cliffs - has dried out significantly, and large cracks have developed in some areas.

"When heavy rain arrives, water can quickly penetrate these cracks and speed up the process of landslips, potentially causing rock falls and mudslides."
