Mary Long-Dhonau, also known as Flood Mary, will be on hand to offer advice

Datchet residents and people living in surrounding areas will be able to get flooding advice from a leading campaigner.

Mary Long-Dhonau, perhaps better known as Flood Mary, has experienced severe flooding herself and she will give out tips from her Flood Mobile.

Hundreds of homes in Datchet and nearby areas suffered serious flooding from the River Thames in February 2014, which one resident said created scenes like those from a "horror movie".

Flood Mary and her Flood Mobile will be at Datchet Recreation Ground from 11:00 BST to 17:00 as part of an event organised by Datchet Parish Council.

"Flooding is devastating, but small steps can make a big difference. I'm looking forward to meeting Datchet residents and sharing practical advice," Long-Dhonau said.

Fourteen severe flood warnings were put in place along a stretch of the river in Berkshire and Surrey during the significant floods just over 12 years ago.

Flood Mary's top tips to prevent damage

  • Know your flood risk and sign up for a flood alert from the Environment Agency
  • Have a flood to-do list - so you know exactly what you are going to do
  • Move your car
  • Move your personal belongings away - including items of sentimental value - and place them in plastic boxes upstairs. If you live in a bungalow, ask a friend to store them for you
  • There are ways to protect your furniture. Mary dresses her kitchen table legs in wellington boots, a plastic bucket, and a bin, then places a plastic box on top
