Plan to demolish 1960s pub for new homes approved

A plan to knock down a pub and replace it with new homes has been approved by councillors.

The Badger pub in Brockwell Lane, Chesterfield, which closed in April, will now be demolished to be replaced by nine detached houses.

Planning officers at Chesterfield Borough Council supported the plan and said traditional pubs had become "less viable" and added the homes were the "most effective use for the land".

Councillors on the planning committee voted unanimously in approving the application.

According to planning documents, the pub, which opened in the 1960s, closed because of "financial and economic constraints" and a sustained lack of custom since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The applicant, Brockwell Asset Management Co, said the proposals offered a "unique opportunity to deliver a high-quality, bespoke residential development within a sustainable urban area".
