Firefighters in Jersey say the risk of a wildfire is "much higher" at the moment

The risk of wildfires is "much higher" due to the current spell of hot weather, the fire service has said.

Jersey Fire Service said land across the island was "very dry" and incidents could start easily and spread quickly in the conditions. Jersey Met has forecast "sunny and hot" weather with a maximum temperature of 34C (93.2F) on Monday.

The service said previous wildfires on the island, including at L'Etacq in 2009, caused significant damage to the landscape.

Advice issued to people included disposing of cigarettes properly rather than dropping them on the ground and taking glass home or throwing it away safely as it can start fires on dry grass.

The service added people should also never put hot disposable barbecues in bins and to avoid campfires and bonfires.

"If you see a fire, call 999 immediately and give your location as clearly as possible, it helps us get there quickly," a spokesperson said.

"Enjoy the weather, but don't spoil our beautiful island."
