Jersey Fire and Rescue Service asked people to ensure disposable barbecues were given sufficient time to cool after use

People in Jersey are being reminded how to safely discard disposable barbecues after two bin fires.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service asked people to ensure disposable barbecues were given sufficient time to cool and had been doused with water before being placed in a bin.

It said in the past week it had attended two bin fires caused by disposable barbecues being thrown away while still hot.

The fire service said to prevent such fires, disposable barbecues should be allowed to cool completely and never be thrown away while still hot. It added that barbecues should be used outdoors on level ground and away from buildings, never left unattended, and water or sand should be kept nearby.
