Floating car heading out to sea for second trip

An amphibious car is set to go on a second cross-sea journey to raise money for a marine ambulance.

Paul Phillips and Gary Ward are planning to take the yellow Daihatsu vehicle they converted into a seaworthy vessel three miles (4.8km) across the water from Guernsey to the car free island of Herm in aid of the St John Ambulance Flying Christine III.

The pair, who volunteer for on the marine ambulance, completed a nine-mile (14.5km) journey from Guernsey to Sark two weeks ago and have already raised more than £14,000.

The car is due to leave the Old Lifeboat slipway on Castle Embankment at 11:00 BST with support boats and the Flying Christine III joining them for the crossing.

Philips and Ward were originally due to travel from Guernsey to Herm at the end of August, but were forced to postpone the journey due to poor weather.

The duo, who completed a similar challenge 34 years ago, said the trip to Sark was a "real achievement", but they wanted to get the amphibious car to Herm as well.

"It is important to all of us that we take the car to Herm, because the boat serves all the islands and makes lots of trips to Herm every year," Ward said.

"The car stood up well in the sea conditions last time and this is a shorter crossing, so everything is looking good."
