An "inexperienced" hiker has been rescued with the help of fellow walkers after getting lost in the dark.

Keswick Mountain Rescue (KMR) said 18 of its volunteers were joined by five from Penrith Mountain Rescue to help the 30-year-old woman down from Lining Crag in Cumbria.

Earlier in the day, the woman had met a group of walkers who thought she looked "inexperienced and poorly equipped", KMR said, and the group gave her a torch and their phone number in case she ran into any problems.

Hours later, she called them to say she was lost as well as cold and wet due to bad weather and the group contacted Cumbria Police, who called KMR at 20:30 BST.

The woman still had mobile signal and KMR said she seemed to be at risk of hypothermia due to high winds and heavy rain.

Keswick team members approached from Stonethwaite and reached the woman about 22:20.

After giving her warm, dry clothing and some hot drink and food, she was assessed and was able to walk slowly down.

She had been on a circuitous route from Langdale to Borrowdale, KMR said.

"Many thanks to the five Penrith MRT members for their assistance on a manky night and also very well done to the other walkers who went above and beyond helping this woman," the team posted on social media.
