Gallows Corner opens after months of delays

A busy flyover and roundabout linking the capital with Essex has reopened to traffic, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed.

The Gallows Corner flyover in Romford was built as a temporary structure in the 1970s and highways officials said it was in a very poor condition and needed completely replacing.

Construction began in March 2025 and it was due to open in the spring.

"We'd like to apologise to local residents, businesses and road users for the delays to these works and thank them for their patience while this essential project has been carried out," said Stuart Harvey, TfL's chief capital officer.

Among the reasons for the delays was "complex work" required by Essex and Suffolk Water, which had to divert and replace water mains.

The junction links the A12, which takes drivers from Hackney Wick up to Lowestoft in Suffolk, with the A127 which takes motorists to Southend.

TfL said "all elements" of the flyover were strengthened, and new pedestrian and cycle crossings have been installed.
