TfL to build more than 50 bus driver toilet blocks

More than 50 extra toilet blocks will be built for London's bus drivers in the next three years, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

The organisation will fund an additional 53 blocks across the capital to ensure there were "suitable toilet facilities for drivers on every route".

Six bus routes in London do not currently have toilet facilities at either terminus and 10 other routes have toilets at a terminus that may not be accessible throughout the whole route operating time, TfL said.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said TfL was "working at pace" to install the "essential facilities".

Unite regional officer John Murphy said the plan was a significant step for improving driver welfare, but more needed to be done.

"All London bus drivers should have reasonable access to toilets 24 hours a day, all-year-round. Unite will continue to campaign until this happens," he said.

TfL said the majority of London's almost 700 bus routes had toilets at one or both of the route and it was working with stakeholders to agree locations for the six routes without.

Carl Eddleston from TfL said drivers "rightly expect" to have toilet facilities, adding: "We'll continue to work closely with operators, drivers and trade unions to ensure that everyone can work safely and comfortably on our bus network."
