School closes at short notice after gas supply issue

A school in Nottinghamshire has announced a short-notice closure after it was left without a gas supply.

Quarrydale Academy, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, announced in a post on social media on Friday morning that the school would be closed for the day due to an "expected issue with a faulty gas valve".

The issue meant the kitchen was left without a gas supply, leaving the school's canteen "fully un-operational", which led to the decision to close.

Head teacher Tim Paling said the school was expected to reopen as normal on Monday.

In an online statement, Paling added: "During a normal school day, the academy serves in excess of 1,000 meals across break and lunchtime, and therefore operating without a fully functioning kitchen is not a viable option.

"Schools legally must be able to provide a lunch to pupils during the school day and due to the canteen being fully un-operational, this is not possible.

"We appreciate that closing the academy at short notice may cause significant inconvenience for families, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption this may cause."

The school said lessons would be set by teachers on an online teaching platform on Friday.
