The work on the two Shrewsbury bridges will include cleaning, repairing and repainting parts of them, as well as some steelwork repairs.

Existing pigeon-proofing panels will be replaced with new mesh to address the problem of pigeons roosting and fouling under the Castle Foregate bridge.

Throughout the work, the bridges will remain open to vehicles during daytime hours, however the footpath on the station side of Castle Foregate/Castle Gates will be closed to pedestrians.

An alternative signed pedestrian diversion route will be provided.

Emergency services will be able to get through even when the the road is closed, and Shropshire Council said it had spoken to the fire service, which is based nearby, to mitigate the effect of the work.

Here's a summary of the closure details:

  • Castle Foregate, Cross Street and Howard Street will close overnight for five weeks from 7 June, Monday to Thursday
  • There will be no road closures on a Friday night
  • Further closures will be in place in the final two weeks of the scheme, from Sunday to Thursday
  • The closures will operate from 20:00 to 06:00
  • A pedestrian footpath will remain open during the overnight periods
  • Starting 24 May, closures will be required on Sunday mornings only from 00:30 to 07:00

  • Traffic will be diverted by a signed diversion route
  • Access over the bridge for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be in place
  • Access to frontages will be maintained up to the closure
  • Advance notice signs will be put up and letters sent to local properties
