Council plans new 20mph limit near 20 schools
Getty ImagesSpeed limits of 20mph could be brought in, near to around 20 schools in Shropshire.
Work had started at seven schools and would take place at another 12 during this spring and summer, subject to a successful consultation, Shropshire Council said.
The projects were a mixture of "a signed-only 20mph limit, a variable 20mph limit that applies at certain times of the day, or a 20mph zone with traffic calming measures."
Characteristics specific to the sites determined the level of intervention that may be required, the authority said.
Schools were identified following work to determine where a 20mph speed restriction or other safety measures could deliver "real benefits".
Work has been, or would be, carried out following engagement with schools, councillors and town/parish councils.
"Post-scheme monitoring" would take place at sites to assess the impact on reducing speeds.
Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, Rob Wilson, stated the authority "must explore further opportunities to improve safety for the whole journey to school, not just outside the school gates".
