Weather forces last-minute market cancellation

A popular street market has been cancelled with less than a day's notice due to concerns over the weather.

Middlesbrough's Orange Pip Market was set to take place on Saturday in Bedford and Baker streets but organisers said wind gusts meant it was no longer safe for it to take place.

The short notice meant that an alternative could not be found in time so they were left with the "difficult decision" that cancellation was the only option.

Middlesbrough Council said: "We apologise for the disappointment this will cause and the impact it will have on traders, artists and local businesses."

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said Middlesbrough residents and those from further afield were being encouraged to still visit as "many local businesses will have organised events to coincide with the market".

Orange Pip is celebrating it 10th birthday this year, with five events in the calendar running from May until September, with the next due to be held on 29 August.
