'Fault' caused chlorine leak at leisure centre

A "technical fault" at a leisure centre in Derby caused a chlorine leak which prompted an evacuation and saw 15 people taken to hospital, the site's operator has confirmed.

Emergency services were called to Moorways Sports Village and Water Park in Moor Lane, Allenton, on 30 July.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters detected a chlorine leak in the plant room and they ventilated the area until there was no elevated readings.

Simon Morgan, area contract manager for Everyone Active - which operates the site owned by Derby City Council - said following a "thorough investigation" it was found the incident was caused by a technical fault in the plant room.

Fifteen adults and children were taken to hospital for precautionary checks after reporting breathing difficulties, the fire service said.

The site reopened at 12:00 BST the following day.

Morgan said the technical fault in the plant room had been "rectified" and added: "We would like to reassure our customers that their safety is our number one priority."
