Criminals target students in cash for parcels scam

Criminals are offering people cash to take in parcels containing drugs, weapons and stolen goods, in what West Yorkshire Police have described as a "growing trend".

The force said gangs were targeting students and vulnerable people via social media, encouraging them to accept packages on their behalf in exchange for money.

A police spokesperson anyone caught accepting a parcel could be prosecuted for possession of controlled drugs, handing stolen goods or money laundering.

Ch Insp Michelle Swift said: "What may seem like an easy favour or a way to get quick cash could leave you facing a police investigation and a criminal record."

She added: "This is worryingly becoming a growing trend we're seeing here in West Yorkshire.

"Criminals will often use social media like Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook to recruit people to help them.

"If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and report it to us."

She encouraged parents with university-age children to make them aware of this trend and the associated dangers.
