Murder inquiry arrest after death of woman

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of woman in her 70s.

Hampshire Police said it was called to a "concern for welfare" at a property on Cyprus Road in Portsmouth just before 10:00 BST on Monday.

The force said a woman in her 70s was pronounced dead at the scene and that her death was currently being treated as suspicious.

It said a 48-year-old man from Portsmouth had been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in police custody.

The force said the woman's next of kin had been notified and were currently being supported by specialist officers.

It added that its investigation was ongoing and police remained at the scene.
