Warning after crews called out to deal with bonfire

Firefighters are calling for members of the public to take care after putting out a bonfire on dry grassland.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said a crew was called out to land off Kirkby Lane, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, at about 19:05 BST on Sunday.

Two hose reel jets, one main jet and plant machinery were used to extinguish the fire - which the fire service said had been lit without the landowner's knowledge -and the crew left the scene at 21:05.

With the service having only stood down a major incident a week ago, it warned people not to light bonfires or burn vegetation after the recent run of heatwaves.

"With the current hot, dry weather, please do not light bonfires or burn vegetation. Even though rain is forecast, it will take significant rainfall to properly reduce the risk of fires spreading into areas that were not intended to burn," the fire service said.

"Please help us keep our communities, countryside and firefighters safe. If conditions are dry and hot, don't light it."
