Fire service stands down major incident

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has stood down a major incident declared in response to "sustained, increased demand" across the county.

The service declared the major incident on Sunday and said it was operating with "very limited resources" and "reduced pump availability".

It said on Sunday crews attended a blaze at Sherwood Pines and firefighters continued to dampen down at a major woodland fire which began on Saturday at Strawberry Hill Heath in Rainworth.

There have been a number of outdoor fires across Nottinghamshire in the past seven days, including a fire on 50,000 sq m (12.3 acres) of grass and forest land in Meden Vale on Tuesday, and a fire in Sneinton on Thursday.

They have come as an extremely dry spell continues across much of England and Wales, with July being recorded as the driest since Met Office records began 190 years ago.

A spokesperson for the service urged people to be careful when discarding cigarettes and to pack a picnic instead of bringing a barbecue.
