Shaun Davies confirmed he would stand down as leader on 18 July

A council will choose a new leader within the next fortnight after its current one was elected as an MP.

Telford and Wrekin Council said a vote would be held at a full council meeting on 18 July when councillor Shaun Davies stands down.

Mr Davies emerged victorious in the contest to represent the Telford constituency during Thursday’s election with a 45% share of the vote.

Confirming his intention to stand down as the council's leader, a position he had held since 2016, the new Labour MP said a duty of service remained in his blood.

In a statement released by the council, Mr Davies said he would continue to serve as a councillor for the Dawley and Malinslee ward.
