Lakeside venue attracts thousands since reopening

More than 7,800 people visited Telford's recently restored lakeside amphitheatre over the summer.

The 400-seat venue reopened in July for the first time since the 1990s and put on a range of theatre, comedy, family shows and free band days.

Earlier in the summer it went through a six-week refit, including the replacement of the stage, which sits at the waters edge.

Angela McClements, the Telford and Wrekin councillor responsible for culture, tourism and leisure, said it had been a "fantastic first season for the amphitheatre".

She also said the interest in events there "shows exactly why this venue means so much to the residents of Telford and Wrekin".

The summer season concluded with a performance of Shakespeare's Macbeth on 3 September and the council said planning had begun for next summer's events.

The amphitheatre is made up of a 400-seat terraced bowl with bench-seats, leading down to a wooden stage beside a pool.

In its heyday, during the 1980s, the amphitheatre by Randlay Pool in the park was "a vibrant cultural hub" which hosted regular live gigs and performances, before later closing in the 1990s, the council said.

Residents approached the authority about restoring the feature in 2024 and funding was approved earlier this year for work to be carried out.

New lights, stage, security rails and electrics have been installed as well the site being tidied up.
