A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a car hit a bin lorry in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Nottinghamshire Police said it was called to a "domestic incident" at about 08:15 BST on Tuesday and after finding a suspect had left the scene, officers spotted a vehicle being driven erratically.

The vehicle stopped when it struck an Ashfield District Council bin lorry, the force said, with council workers helping to detain one suspect while officers pursued another.

A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving while over the legal alcohol limit and failing to stop. A 39-year-old man was also detained but later released with no further action taken.

The 45-year-old has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

In a statement, a police spokesperson thanked "those helpful council workers who assisted us in making these arrests".

"We would never ask anyone to put themselves in harm's way to help our officers in their duty, however, their courage and sense of wanting to help is truly commendable," they said.
