High street bakery chain Greggs has closed 11 stores amid the continuing heatwave

The temporary closure of Greggs stores, due to the high temperatures, has been extended, the company says.

Eleven sites across the UK, including three in the West Midlands, have been closed since Wednesday morning and were set to reopen earlier.

As the red weather warning has been extended, the shops will remain closed, the company said in a statement.

The high street bakery said they had been closed "to protect its customers and colleagues during the severe hot weather".

A red extreme heat warning is in force for central southern England and south-east England until 21:00 BST.

Other regions of England, including the West Midlands, remain under an amber alert until midnight.

The stores affected are:

* Aldridge

* Wolverhampton

* Luton

* Gosport

* Trowbridge

* Barnet

* Marlborough

* Wantage

* Dudley

* Northampton

* Leicester Square, London
