People warned to keep windows shut after huge trading estate fire

Firefighters have been withdrawn after containing a massive fire at an industrial estate that broke out in the middle of the night.

Residents reported hearing popping sounds and smelling smoke from Star Trading Estate in Caerleon, Newport.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) said it sent 10 fire engines following the 999 call at 02:42 BST.

People have shared photos on local Facebook group showing a black plume of smoke high over the site, while Public Health Wales has advised householders living in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.

SWFRS said the main firefighting operation had been completed, but crews will "continue to monitor the site".

"The site has now been handed back to the owners. A joint investigation will be carried out by SWFRS and Gwent Police," it added.

The fire service said the site had been evacuated and all persons accounted for.

"Due to smoke in the vicinity, residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed."

SWFRS thanked local residents and businesses for their cooperation.
