Medical centre could be built on empty plot of land

A new medical centre could be built on an unused council-owned plot of land on an industrial estate.

North Northamptonshire Council will meet on Tuesday to discuss the plans to sell the site at Park Farm Industrial Estate, in Wellingborough, to University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Group (UHN).

The Reform UK-led authority said the plot was "identified as surplus in May 2026".

The new modern facility could include an elective surgical hub and a new community diagnostic centre - and could open by 2028.

Before construction work could begin a full assessment and business case would need to be developed and planning permission granted.

Polly Grimmett, director of strategy at UHN, said: "Our ambition for Wellingborough is to create a modern healthcare hub that brings more care closer to home for local people.

"By bringing together diagnostics and elective surgery in an accessible community location, we can deliver faster diagnosis, quicker treatment and more joined-up care, while easing pressure on our hospital sites and helping tackle health inequalities across Northamptonshire."

Reform UK councillor Ken Harrington, executive member for assets, waste and environmental services, said it would bring a "plot of land back into use for wider social and economic benefits".

He said he hoped it would improve health facilities and bring new job opportunities.

The council's executive will meet on 11 August to discuss the potential sale.
