Police in Melton Mowbray are urging motorists to watch their speed after reporting repeated issues along a new road.

A bypass around the town - which has been named Pork Pie Way after a public vote - opened last month as part of a bid to reduce congestion.

However, Leicestershire Police said "a large number of vehicles" had been caught speeding on the 4.4-mile (7.1km) route, which has a 40mph limit.

A post on the force's Facebook page for Melton also criticised a "lack of observation and understanding of road signs shown by some drivers".

"Road safety and reducing road casualties is one of our top priorities," they said.

"This becomes more pertinent in the summer months as generally we see a rise in casualties and deaths on our roads."

Pork Pie Way weighed in at a cost of £131m, from an original budget of £63.5m.

Before it opened, animal rights charity Peta called on Leicestershire County Council to remove Pork Pie Way from a list of potential names for the new bypass, calling the suggestion "pig-demeaning".
