An outdoor pool has been closed after a boy had to be rescued by a lifeguard.

East of England Ambulance Service said a patient was airlifted from Hitchin Swimming and Fitness Centre in Hertfordshire to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, after paramedics were called at about 14:20 BST.

Everyone Active, which runs the venue, said "a boy" had been removed from the lido by a lifeguard.

Tim Melvin, the firm's contract manager, said: "Emergency services were called and the boy was taken to hospital. We send him our best wishes and hope he makes a full recovery."

The operator said the indoor and outdoor pools would remain closed until Friday, while the venue's gym would remain open as usual.
