Man walking on hard shoulder killed in HGV crash
Getty ImagesA man who was walking on the A1(M) has been killed in a crash involving an HGV, police said.
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway of the motorway at Darrington just after 07:30 BST, to reports of a man walking along the hard shoulder.
West Yorkshire Police said the man had been involved in another crash at about 07:15 BST on Valley Road, which involved a white Renault Captur and a white Toyota Proace City van.
The van driver, who is understood to be a 60-year-old from Leeds, then left the scene on foot and was struck by the HGV just before the Ferrybridge junction of the A1(M).
Det Insp Daniel Ridgway said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has lost his life. His family are aware and are being offered specialist support.
"It is anticipated that a closure will remain in place on the A1M in both directions into the afternoon.
"This is to ensure that the circumstances of this man's death are fully investigated and to make sure the road is safe for other road users."
He asked anyone who was in the area with a dashcam that may have captured the man's movements to come forward.
